FINE ARTS
BAND
Music education at Great Hope Baptist School begins in third grade with recorder, giving students a strong foundation in reading music, rhythm, and basic musicianship. Students then have opportunities to continue developing their skills through Elementary Band and High School Band. Through instruction, rehearsal, and performance, students learn discipline, teamwork, and the joy of using their musical abilities with excellence.

CHOIR
Vocal music is an important part of Fine Arts at Great Hope Baptist School. Students begin developing a love for music through Preschool Music and Elementary Music, where they learn basic musical concepts, singing skills, and ensemble participation. As they advance, students participate in Middle School Choir and High School Choir, strengthening their vocal technique, musicianship, confidence, and ability to work together as an ensemble.

HANDBELLS
Students in middle school and high school have the opportunity to develop musical skill through handbell ensembles. Handbells require careful listening, precise timing, concentration, and teamwork, as each student contributes an essential part to the finished piece. This unique ensemble experience helps students grow in both musicianship and cooperation while preparing music for school, church, and special performances.

SPEECH
Our speech program is designed to help students become confident, effective communicators. Students progress through Level I (grades 4–6), Level II (grades 7–9), and Level III (grades 10–12), developing skills in delivery, interpretation, organization, and public speaking. Every Level II and Level III student is required to prepare and present at least one speech each year, giving students regular opportunities to practice speaking clearly and confidently before an audience.

ART
Art instruction at Great Hope Baptist School gives students opportunities to develop creativity, observation, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for visual expression. Students participate in art at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels, exploring age-appropriate techniques and artistic concepts. Each student is required to complete at least one art piece every year, encouraging every student to develop and demonstrate his or her creative abilities.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Great Hope Baptist School offers students the opportunity to receive private music instruction from experienced music teachers. Lessons may be available in piano, voice, and a variety of other instruments, allowing students to receive individualized instruction and further develop their musical abilities. Families interested in private lessons are encouraged to contact the school office for current availability and additional information.

FINE ARTS
COMPETITIONS

Great Hope Baptist School proudly participates in the Old Dominion Association of Church Schools (ODACS) Fine Arts Competition, giving students opportunities to develop their talents and represent our school at progressively higher levels of competition. We begin by holding school run-offs for Levels I–III to determine which students will represent GHBS at the Southeast Regional Competition. Students in Levels II and III who earn first place at Regionals advance to represent both our school and the Southeast Region at the ODACS State Competition. From there, Level III students who win at the state level have the opportunity to represent Virginia at the AACS National Competition, hosted at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. Through each stage, students are challenged to pursue excellence, strengthen their God-given abilities, and represent their school with character and confidence.
